The Blessing Box

All Hugh wants for Christmas is a dog, but an out-of-sorts Santa has something else in mind—an idea his elves think is nuttier than a fruitcake.

When Hugh opens Santa’s unusual gift, the Blessing Box, his dream of a dog of his own crumbles like a Christmas cookie. But Hugh soon realizes the mystical box isn’t empty after all. It holds an invisible key called opportunity—one that could help him prove to his parents he’s ready for a dog.

From one Christmas to the next, Hugh, a sixth grader on the autism spectrum, works tirelessly to make his dream come true. But bullies, betrayal, and the challenge of standing up for himself threaten to derail his plans. Fortunately, Hugh’s mischievous best friend is determined to help—even if it means landing in the doghouse herself. And one special elf may risk using her forbidden magic to help Hugh along the way.

When an unexpected accident forces Hugh to confront a life-or-death decision, he may have to sacrifice everything he has worked so hard for.

And if that happens, Santa’s elves fear that Santa may never come down a chimney again.

The Blessing Box is a Christian, uplifting, whimsical Christmas adventure about friendship, the courage to be your true self, and discovering that sometimes the greatest gifts are the ones you give from the heart.

Perfect for late-elementary and middle-grade readers who enjoy heartfelt stories like R. J. Palacio’s Wonder and Kathryn Erskine’s Mockingbird—with an extra helping of holiday magic and reminders that Jesus is the reason for the season.
